Football’s full of headlines about transfers, tantrums, and VAR chaos — but every now and then, something decent cuts through the noise. This time, it’s Southampton FC doing what the game should do best: giving kids a chance.
The Saints and their Official New Homes Partner, Bargate, are kicking off the third year of their Soccer Schools initiative, handing free coaching sessions to children eligible for the government’s Pupil Premium grant. No fees. No fuss. Just football.
Started back in 2023, the project’s already opened doors for a hundred kids who might never have had the boots, kit, or cash to join in. Now, they’re adding 50 more free places — plus a Taster Day for another 100 children who qualify. That’s a lot of happy parents and a few more muddy laundry loads across Hampshire.
And this isn’t a one-off gesture to grab headlines. Southampton FC and Bargate have made a habit of turning good intentions into real community change. They’ve already renovated the Bargate Sensory Room at St Mary’s and backed the Saints Foundation’s Senior Saints Dinner, an evening that gives older fans their moment in the spotlight — proof that community spirit doesn’t retire at 65.
“We’re pleased to continue our partnership with Bargate and launch the third year of our Soccer Schools initiative for Pupil Premium eligible children,” said Tom Grevatt, Head of Football Programmes at Southampton FC. “It reflects our shared values by creating opportunities, building confidence and supporting those who need it most. Bargate have been an incredible partner in helping us extend the positive impact of Saints Soccer Schools into the wider community.”
Bargate’s even stepping up as Match Sponsor for this weekend’s Southampton FC Women v Nottingham Forest clash — putting the initiative front and centre on matchday and showing that the club’s commitment runs deeper than a few warm-up drills.
“Supporting the next generation and creating meaningful opportunities for local families is something we’re incredibly passionate about,” said Andrew French, Sales & Marketing Director at Bargate. “This initiative for Pupil Premium eligible students opens doors for children who may not otherwise experience the joy of playing football and learning new skills with Saints coaches. We’re proud to continue our partnership and help the programme grow this season.”
In a world where money usually does the talking, Southampton FC and Bargate are letting action do the shouting. They’re proving that football’s still got room for heart — and that sometimes, the biggest wins aren’t the ones on the scoreboard.
