New Era for ukactive as David Stalker Named Chair, Melinda Nicci to Drive Digital Strategy

David Stalker

David Stalker has been appointed as the new Chair of ukactive, marking a pivotal moment for the organisation and the wider physical activity sector. Alongside his appointment, Melinda Nicci joins the Board of Directors as Digital Lead, bringing heavyweight experience in health technology and AI.

For anyone in the industry, Stalker’s name needs little introduction. With more than 35 years under his belt, he’s led from the front as CEO of ukactive (2008–2016), Chair of CIMSPA, CEO of Myzone, President of EuropeActive, and non-executive Director of Alliance Leisure. Now, he returns to steer the ship for a three-year term, succeeding Katy Cox, who stepped in as Interim Chair after Mike Farrar’s departure in February. Cox will return to her role as Treasurer.

His appointment follows a rigorous recruitment process that attracted top-tier candidates from across industries, but Stalker’s deep roots in the sector made him the standout choice. “It is an honour to be appointed Chair of ukactive,” said Stalker. “Having previously served as CEO of ukactive, it has been hugely rewarding to witness both the growth of the organisation and the sector we serve, and I am looking forward to playing my part in continuing this growth.

“Throughout my career I have championed the recognition of physical activity as a cornerstone of health and wellbeing, and I will continue to advocate for its role in improving the physical, mental and social wellbeing of our communities.

“ukactive’s members are the engine room of physical activity in the UK and I look forward to supporting the Board, the Executive and the team to help drive our collective mission and reach more people.”

A Digital Edge for a Changing Sector

Melinda Nicci

Joining him at the table is Melinda Nicci, appointed as a co-opted Board member and Digital Lead. Nicci’s career spans more than three decades in health, fitness, and wellness, including senior roles at Virgin Active, LA Fitness, Phillips, and The Body Collective Group (Baby2Body), which she founded in 2015.

Her expertise comes at a time when the industry is undergoing rapid digital transformation. “I am honoured to join the Board of ukactive and to have the chance to help shape the future of our industry,” Nicci said. “I am excited to help our sector capitalise on the opportunities presented by advances in technology and drive the positive change we can bring to communities by working together.”

Growth Backed by Record Participation

Stalker and Nicci’s appointments come as the sector hits unprecedented numbers. According to the UK Health and Fitness Market Report 2025, a record 11.5 million people are now members of health and fitness clubs across the UK. This surge in participation underscores the sector’s growing role in supporting physical and mental health nationwide.

ukactive’s Vision 2030 strategy aims to harness this momentum, helping its members expand their impact and adapt to the evolving landscape.

Strong Backing from the Board

The Board’s confidence in the new leadership was clear. “We are very glad to announce David as Chair of ukactive, which marks an exciting new chapter in the growth of the organisation and the sector we serve,” said Treasurer Katy Cox. “He demonstrates a deep understanding of and passion for the sector, as well as bringing strong commercial expertise.

“Melinda will be a fantastic addition to the Board, bringing fresh energy and sector understanding, based on her knowledge and experience from the health tech world. I look forward to working with them both and building on the great work of our predecessors.”

ukactive CEO Huw Edwards echoed those sentiments: “On behalf of the ukactive Board, Executive and staff, we are delighted to welcome David to his new role as Chair of ukactive, and Melinda as the Board’s new Digital Lead.

“David has committed himself to the sector’s development throughout his career and as a leading advocate of ukactive’s work, will help us continue to grow. And Melinda’s digital expertise and innovative approach will support us to stay ahead in this vital area.

“On behalf of the Board, I would like to thank Katy for her support as Interim Chair throughout this transition and we look forward to working with David and Melinda to continue delivering for our members.”

A New Chapter

As the new Chair of ukactive, David Stalker brings both seasoned leadership and a clear vision at a critical time for the sector. With Melinda Nicci driving digital innovation, ukactive’s Board is positioning itself to lead the UK’s physical activity industry into a new era of growth and influence.
